SWV CSWV must be acquired through careful planning and compliance with Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and VFS Global protocols.

SAQA Evaluation

You will have to send your Proof of Qualifications / Academic Records (Degree, Diploma, etc.) to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to have your foreign qualification verified.9 SAQA will issue a certificate confirming the equivalent South African NQF level.10 This step will take weeks to be completed and should be the first one to be done.

Bodily Registration of Professionals

In case your competence is a regulated competence (e.g. Engineer, Auditor, or Doctor), you would have to apply, or seek registration, with the appropriate Professional Body in South Africa (e.g., ECSA, HPCSA).11 You would have to provide a letter by this body, which certifies your skills or competence to the DHA.

You should present your application physically at the closest South African Embassy, Consulate or any of the VFS Global Visa Application centres in your country of ordinary residence.

Important Notice: It is not usually possible to apply to the first work visa, when in South Africa, on a tourist visa. You must apply abroad.

The Alternative option General Work Visa (GWV)

The employer is obliged to give the written Employment Contract containing the terms of employment and remuneration.
It introduces significant complexity and time delay to this process, and the CSWV is the best way when possible.
